Standards Development Overview

The goal

To adapt the HL7® FHIR® standard and create a library of profiles (resources and interaction patterns) that implementers can adopt to simplify integration and interoperability within UK health and social care.

This section covers the establishment of a set of specifications of resource profiles and FHIR APIs, for the purposes of communication across different clinical settings, referred to as “Care Connect”.

Outputs

A library of HL7® FHIR® resource profiles and interaction patterns.

Once having established a consensus with INTEROPen members these will be submitted for clinical validation and feedback by a wider group of stakeholders, the lead clinical validation organisation being the PRSB.

Methodology

The methodology is evolving and is held on GitHub.

  • FHIR Resource Profiles – This section references profile collections that have been submitted by INTEROPen members or member groups for consideration and further validation by other stakeholders.
  • Connectathons – The initial commitment of INTEROPen is to the design and demonstration (via a connectathon) of structured data exchange using profiles based on the emerging FHIR standard, exchange of data being across seven health and social care domains in support of a patient’s care pathway.
  • Implementation Guide – A guide for developers describing the published Care Connect resources and interaction patterns.
